Uneventful Day?

Yes it almost was. I was just sure that I would have nothing to blog about and it would be another one of those boring blogs. But no there was a little excitement after all.
Jeremy was cooking a brisket and some pork shoulders for the church’s work day today. He started them yesterday. Well actually he got them ready and told me to put them in at what time. So I did. When I put them in however I was in hurry and I slid them in instead of pulling out the rack and placing it on. Unbeknownst to me I had torn little holes in the bottom of the tinfoil that they were wrapped in, yes all three of them. While they were cooking the “juice” was leaking out the bottom onto the bottom of my stove. Not to fear when Jeremy noticed it this morning he fixed the wholes and the brisket was one of the best he has ever made (he cooks them for about 20 hours), I heard the pork shoulders were good also. Anyway there was still “juice” all over the bottom of the stove, which I promptly forgot about.

Keeping that in mind, the rest of the day we all just hung out and lay around. Josiah played on the computer with Avrah and Judah played on the wii and the babies played in some empty diapers boxes. Jeremy had class. A very lazy day. I didn’t think Jeremy would be home for dinner as his class usually goes till 6:30 and for some reason I thought it would be later then that when he finally got home. I decided to not make the meal on the menu but to just do chicken nuggets for the kids, and since the babies where fussy and already hungry I put theirs in the microwave. Then I decided to make the big kids’ chicken in the oven so I turned it on to preheat it and when I went to put the chicken in I notice all this black smoke coming out of the oven. I opened it up and sure enough there is a little fire in my oven. So without really thinking I grabbed a small cup of water that was on the counter and I threw it on it. Let me pause right here to let you know that I am very aware of the fact that you are NOT supposed to use water on a grease fire. But it was in the oven and I didn’t think oh it’s a grease fire I just thought oh it’s a fire, hurry put water on it. Luckily all the kids were in the other room because as you may have guessed as soon as the water hit the fire it got bigger, I slammed the oven shut and while reminding myself about the whole water/grease thing remembered what you are supposed to use on grease fires… flour or baking powder, so I grabbed the big bag of flour and poured some onto the nearest plate and opened the oven ,by this time it was just really black smoke, I’m pretty sure the fire had been smothered out when I closed the oven door, but just to be sure I dumped the flour in there too.

All is well now, just a very messy oven that needs to be cleaned out.

And Jeremy saved dinner by bringing home Chinese food. So that is one day this week that we ate “out”. Not too bad.

Cold day 2

So I thought we would take advantage of the “snow” day and go see a movie. The kids have been dying to see Alvin and the chipmunks the squeakquel. I got a babysitter for the babies and took my friend R and her two kids D and M went with us. We were a tad late and I missed the first little bit because I was getting popcorn and drinks, to ensure that everyone stayed in their seats and paid attention. They all did great; the movie was funny and cute. We had decided to go to McDonalds to get some of the Alvin toys; I hadn’t talked to the kids about this so this was the conversation that I overheard.

D and M and Judah and Josiah were waiting outside the bathroom while I took Avrah, while we were washing our hands this is what we heard. (Of course I heard Judah because he is the loudest)

D: we are going to McDonald’s for lunch

Judah: Is your mom paying or is mine?

D: I think your mom is.

Judah: Ahh man, she never lets us get the toys.

Never fear, we got the happy meals and they got the toys. (I know you were worried)

It was a peaceful afternoon and I got another triangle finished for my hat.

Tonight’s meal was chicken tetrazzini, it really wasn’t a winner. I think it may have been a combination of me not following directions closely enough (used too much pasta) and the recipe just not being a good one (at least that was what Jeremy said. Thanks Babe) probably won’t make that one again for a while.

Got to go throw the babies in the tub.

Cold Day 1.

I am told it was cold out today. I do not know for myself because I did not venture out into it. We all stayed in our pajamas today, except for Josiah who for some reason got dressed in a long sleeve shirt and a sweater, he must have been cold.

We didn’t do much of anything today. I did however make the friendship bread, it was supposed to be made yesterday but we got home late last night and I was tired. So I made it today, it was still good. It must have been, because it makes two loaf pans and there is only one left. The babies REALLY like it, so do the big kids. I fed it to them for snack and after lunch dessert and after dinner dessert too. Their nutritionist would be proud (I am not being sarcastic, she would). Also for dinner I made a quiche I had never made one before and it was really good. Four out of the five Vargas children would agree. Can you guess who didn't like it? I thought it was appropriate to have a breakfast-ish dinner when you stay in your pajamas all day.

I am knitting a hat that I found in a knitting book, it is made up of all these different colored triangles. There are 6 colors and I need 4 of each color, plus 2 of any color. I have 2 more colors to go (8 more triangles) then I can start putting it together. Should be interesting, since I really don’t know what I’m doing.

I am not sure what is going on but Micah is starting to look abused. Actually that isn’t true I do know what is going on, it just isn’t going on in front of me, he is being sibling abused. Hosea has decided to take out all his frustrations out on Micah. I rarely ever see the actual event but the evidence of it is all over Micah, he has three or four different scratch marks, two different places on his face and one on his neck/chest, and then two different bite mark places too. I have no idea how to discipline Hosea for this if I don’t catch him in the act, and even when I do catch him I’m not too sure how to handle it, none of my other children where this aggressive. I know sometimes the babies gang up on Avrah and pull her hair but I don’t think they are this way to other children too, or at least I hope they aren’t. So far what I have done is tell Hosea “no” in a very stern voice and then pick up Micah and hold and comfort him and totally turn my back on Hosea, so that he doesn’t get attention for being mean to his brother. I also want Micah to stand up for himself, but I really don’t want knock down drag out fights going on either.

Here are some pictures of the babies in their pj’s.

Hosea was trying to put that in his pocket, he missed but still was pretty proud of himself.

Cute little brute!

See all the scratches on his face?
Sad cute little guy

Ready for School

I have my books, I have my schedule, I have my ID I am officially a student and am ready for class. I am taking American Federal Government and American History Civil war to present. Wish me luck.

E-mealz thing is going great, for those keeping track this was night three and we all liked it except Josiah, who thought it was too spicy (it wasn't it just had pepperonis-turkey of course- on it).

Anyone want some Amish Friendship Bread? I now have 4 starter bags that I need to pass on to someone else.

It is cold here, and getting colder. So cold in fact that the schools are all shutting down. That would be nice but I just spent two weeks with the kids and was just starting to get stuff done with them back in school. Oh well a little more time with them might be fun. Anybody want some boys for a couple days?

How many DVDs?

It is time to move the DVD player out of reach of the babies. How do I know? Because today when I was looking for the DVD I needed to return and couldn’t find it I decided to open up the DVD player. As I was unplugging it and moving it around I heard a rattling so I thought well maybe there is more than just one in there. I was right. I opened it up and found the DVD I was looking for plus 11 more also!!

TMOMS tonight.

Big boys at school, babies and Avrah napping, dinner in the crock pot, face book all checked, two triangles done for a hat that I am knitting. And now with the blog out of the way I’m going to go enjoy the quiet and watch Heroes.

PS. If you are reading this on my facebook page, if you scroll to the bottom right above the comment box, there is a link that says "view original post" if you click there it will take you to my actual blog.

E-mealz?

Notice anything different about my blog? No? Look around do you see it? Right over there to the right, above my “about me” section. There it is.

It is a new thing I am doing. No I am not selling it, I didn’t start it and it wasn’t even my idea, although I wish it was. What is it? Glad you asked. It is a meal planner. It gives you 7 meals and the ingredients and the directions to make the meal all on one page, and even more they give you a grocery list. They try to build the meals around super markets sales too. You can choose which grocery store (although they don’t have all of them), and there is even an option to customize the meals (if you are only cooking for two, or you are on a diet- weight watchers, carb conscience, fat free..Etc).

This weeks meal plan page

I can’t sing all of its praises yet because I have only done this one night, but I think it will be good for me. My main problem has always been coming up with the meals. I am not the world’s best cook (shocking I know). I do know my way around the kitchen and do know how to follow a recipe, and usually things turn out good even my first time making them. It is just that coming up with a meal plan isn’t easy for me. I don’t know what I want to eat today let alone for Friday. I am not a picky eater and will eat just about anything. There are things I don’t eat but that is for other reasons not because I don’t like them. (We weren’t allowed to “not like” foods at my house growing up). So this solves that problem for me. If you are like me then it may work for you too.

It does cost money (If you are interested let me know I found a coupon) . But it saves money too. It probably paid for itself just tonight, because instead of grabbing something on the way home from Jui jitsu like I wanted to, I went home and fixed what was on the meal plan for dinner tonight. What was it? It was BLT Salad (also had chicken in it) and Cheesy Tortilla strips. Adjusted to my family of course (turkey bacon and no ranch dressing on Judah’s). The real test was did the kids eat it. Judah ate his all and wanted more, he doesn’t like dressing on anything, Mayo, mustard, ketchup, and ranch, nothing on anything he eats I don’t know how the kid can eat a dry salad, but he put it on his tortilla strips like a BLT sandwich. Josiah ate all of his too. Hosea and Avrah didn’t eat much but Micah actually ate the chicken and the cheesy strips. It is normal for Avrah not to eat much at dinner, but Hosea usually eats and Micah usually doesn’t. Also let me add if you think turkey bacon is gross you are probably buying the wrong kind. The kind we had tonight was gross. Note to self and Jeremy don’t buy that kind again. Oscar Meyer/Butterball makes the best turkey bacon.

What is on the menu for tomorrow? Black eyed peas and ham with cornbread muffins and sliced pears. This is a crock pot meal (at least one meal a week is a crock pot and one is a 30 min meal). We are changing this one up a bit since Jeremy doesn’t care for black eyed peas I will be using Navy beans and will be using turkey ham (yes there is such a thing).

Wow I didn’t mean to talk so much about food. Guess I’m just excited. I’ll keep you updated on how it goes. I’m off to fold some laundry and watch my free redbox movie “paper heart”.

Now it is over!

We only thought Christmas was over. Now it is really over. Jeremy’s family did Christmas today. However Hosea woke up with crusty swollen eyes and so I got to stay home all day with him and Micah. After cleaning out his eyes and giving him some eye drops, Hosea was fine.

It was a lame and boring day at my house today, which was mainly my fault; I was bummed for not getting to go and allowed myself to get dragged down by it all.

I did however knit a ball.

I don’t know why. It was supposed to be a box but I guess I didn’t make all the sides as even as I thought and they didn’t all meet up right so I had to make an extra panel but when I added it, it turned it into a ball instead of a box. It’s cool the babies love to throw it to/at me and then fight over it when I throw it for them to get. I tried to teach them to throw it to each other so they wouldn’t fight that only worked for a little bit and then they would forget that they were supposed to be sharing. Guess I should have made two.

Starting a new week tomorrow makes me happy. I love Mondays. A clean slate, a fresh start. Oh and I get my laundry done.
